The Springs Lava Tour

Lava TourOn a clear night you can always see the glow of the magma emerging from the cone from right here at The Springs and occasionally a larger eruption will send red hot boulders tumbling down on our side. However, until the time that Mother Nature deems us the fortune of having the large effusion flows once again visible from here, the best viewing points are a short drive to the western face of the volcano.

Every evening at 6:30pm we offer our guests a guided tour to some of the best (and safest) lava observation points. Although we can't guarantee sightings, and if the cloud cover permits, you will almost certainly be entertained by Arenal's majestic lava show and the thunderous sounds of Strombolian explosions and falling rock. Your guide will explain not only historical and geological facts of the volcano but cultural specifics as well.

Arenal Volcano Hike

Arenal Volcano hikeBefore the violent eruption of 1968, a lavish canopy of vegetation covered the Arenal Volcano. People that climbed Arenal's summit related that inside the crater were large trees. Camping overnight, they would sleep near the many small steam outlets, enjoying the warmth that they provided.

Nowadays, as the volcano is constantly erupting, the best way to view the volcano's lava is from a safe distance. Our tour begins with a hike at the National Park or Mirador El Silencio trails, depending on where the lava is flowing. While hiking, you will have the opportunity to observe a great variety of plants, wildlife, lava rock formations and the Arenal Lake. Expect to experience the volcano first by hearing its magnificent power and then seeing large avalanches of hot lava rocks rolling down its slopes.

During the tour, our experienced guides will provide interesting and educational information regarding the history of this mystical mountain and its surrounding areas.
